Target Audience- 5th and 6th grade health Objective- This behavioral approach to nutrition education will enable students to: · Describe at least three health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables · Identify serving sizes of fruits and vegetables · Record a three day food diary of their food intake and assess it according to the My Pyramid Food Guide · Use the nutritional bracelet technique to increase their fruit and vegetable intake Standards- STANDARD 8.1 (Computer and information literacy ) All students will use computer applications to gather and organize information and to solve problems STANDARD 8.2 (Technology Education) All students will develop an understanding of the nature and impact of technology, engineering, technological design, and the designed world as they relate to the individual, society, and the environment.
Strategy Media/Materials Intro- · Students will be given 5 nutritional bracelets and instructed to use these in preparing their 3 day food diary blog. They will put 5 bands on their right wrist, first thing in the morning. Throughout the day, each time they eat a serving of fruit or vegetable they are to remove one bracelet and place it on their left wrist. The goal is to get all 5 on their left wrist by bedtime. Students will be given a hand-out with instructions.**www.5aday.org**
Body- · Students will do a pre-meal survey of a typical day’s meal. Digital Video Camera They will then be required to keep a 3 day diary of their fruit and vegetable intake. They will record their meals with a digital video camera and post their results on the SchoolFusion Blog. SchoolFusion Blog · Check student’s responses on the food blogs. Provide feedback and additional resources for students to research. www.mypyramid.gov
Conclusion- · Student’s will evaluate and discuss in their blogs the usefulness of this activity in helping them to make a behavioral change · Student’s will be encouraged to share this activity on Facebook and MYSpace by telling at least five people why they are wearing the 5 bracelets · This nutritional activity and behavioral plan is a motivational intervention that may improve adolescent’s daily fruit and vegetable consumption by motivating them to make healthy choices.
